Job Summary
Lawyers For Children is pleased to announce an opening for an LMSW level social worker with experience in New York City’s foster care system. The social worker will be a part of a dynamic team of attorneys and social workers advocating for children in New York City & Family Courts and beyond. Description of Responsibilities
Lawyers For Children social workers practice alongside our attorneys to advocate on behalf of children and youth in various judicial proceedings. Duties include client interviews, investigation, case preparation/planning and oral advocacy as necessary for court testimony, case conferences, and case follow-up. LFC’s social workers are an integral part of the provision of legal services to children and young adults in child protective, foster care, juvenile justice, custody, visitation, termination of parental rights, guardianship, and related proceedings.
Responsibilities and Duties
Social workers at LFC regularly visit clients in the field, interview clients at LFC, and collaborate with attorneys on case strategy. LFC social workers are treated as respected professionals. Social workers are responsible for compiling case notes, completing timely client /family interviews, and aggressively advocating for our clients & position in the court and in the community. LFC social workers are essential to our interdisciplinary model of client representation and are key to our commitment to ensure that every client has a voice in the court proceedings that can determine their future. Social workers report to the Social Work Supervisors and Co-Directors.
Qualifications and Skills
- LMSW
- Demonstrated commitment to the rights of children and youth
- Commitment to interdisciplinary practice of law using the attorney-social worker team model
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure and in crisis situations
- Well-organized, motivated, creative and independent, yet also able to work in a team-oriented environment
- Commitment to providing culturally sensitive services
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, writing, and interviewing skills
- Fluency in oral and written Spanish or French is a plus
- DV/IPV experience is a plus
