Your Rights In The Hospital

Your rights while you are in a psychiatric hospital are ruled by the

Mental Hygiene Law (MHL). Under the MHL, the hospital must tell you about your rights. Some of these rights include:

  • Personal clothing
  • A safe and sanitary environment
  • Adequate grooming and personal hygiene supplies
  • Reasonable privacy while sleeping and bathing
  • Visitation at reasonable times
  • Freedom from abuse or mistreatment by staff or other patients
